Things you will need to be gathering for next class:

Letters of Rec

- You need to find 3 - 5 people who you wish to have write you letters of recommendation. You need to cultivate your relationship with them over the next year.

CV = Resume

- You need to make a list with the names, dates, and addresses of everything you've ever done, anything you have won, everyplace you worked and your high schools information.

Artist statement x2

- One for your Self

- One for a specific piece "Show"

Bio
- basic personal information, the what, where, when of your life

Letter of intent

- this will change depending on need and what your applying for

Portfolio
- you will need 15-20 art pieces

- start collecting images of your best work

- ask the professor in your area of concentration how artwork for your medium should be presented.

Freelance/Selling your Work

Hired to create for a specific job / Selling something you've previously created

Selling your Skills / Selling your Creations

Freelance possibilities:

- Basic Design work: logos, posters, CD/DVD covers, announcements, advertisements, PSA's, pamphlets, business cards, show cards

- Basic Photography: portraits, advertisements, reproduction, product shots, weddings, anniversaries & birthdays, portfolios

- Basic Photoshop: reproduction; portrait manipulation; color correction

- Ceramics: series or individual orders for plates, cups, bowls, vases, mugs, tea pots, complete sets

- Painting: portraits, murals, interior design

- Sculpture: building most anything from a deck on someones house to a commissioned public sculpture in a variety of materials including wood, metal, wax

- Printmaking - see "Basic Design Work"

- Basic Digitalmedia: social media wrangler, web page/site design, see "Basic Design Work", video documentation, CD/DVD duplication, digitize media

How much should you charge? How do you price a job?

Fair Hourly rate + supply cost x2 ~ market value

Projects

Project 1 - "Grad School Application"

Go through the process of applying for one of the Graduate School's you identified in assignment 2. You will need a portfolio, resume, artist statement and ______? (Fill in the blank). This is due on the last day of class

Project 2 - "Opposite You"

For this project you will create a piece of art in your designated medium. To create the piece come up with subject matter, an aesthetic concept, and a process that seams natural to how you work. Then, while creating the piece do the opposite. For example if you work is usually rendered realistic, make it abstract. If you like to work with bold colors, work in grey scale. If you work big, make it small. If you like it textured, make it smooth. Try to create the opposite of your style of art. What would your inverse self create?

- make a list of all the questions you want this class to answer.

Assignment 2

- find 3 grad schools your interested in applying to

Assignment 3

- Create a CV for a specific purpose (MFA, Job, Grant)

Assignment 4

- Come up with 10 ideas for your Senior Thesis Show

Assignment 5

- Ask 5 people to be your letters or recommendation and get their contact information (email, address, phone, title). Create a Holiday Card for them and send it to them during the Holidays. Do this every year from now on.

Assignment 6

- Apply for the Student Juried Art Show

Assignment 7

- Apply for the Semenenko- Clark Fund for Excellence in Art & Art History

Assignment 8

- Write your Senior Art Thesis Proposal. Work with your thesis advisor to do this.

Assignment 9

- Create a portfolio of 10 of your best art pieces. Work with the professor in your area of concentration to learn the best practices for each art medium.
